Let’s face it – almost all parents go through sleepless nights owing to their growing and teething baby. Those drools, those tears and the accompanied cranky pain that come with your little one’s teeth are the things that make the situation all the more difficult to deal with. But then again, it is difficult, not impossible!
Mother’s Zone shares with you some safe baby teething tips and remedies that can help you and your baby during this tough phase.
Give your child a soothing gum rub
Using a clean finger, rub your baby’s gums. The gentle pressure of your finger can help your baby get the much needed relief from the pain that teething brings with it.
Some cooling measures to help them keep their cool
Take a cold washcloth or a spoon to your baby to soothe their baby’s gums. But, be cautious while giving a frozen teething ring, as many believe that a liquid filled frozen teething ring can burst or crack, harming your baby.
Hard and/or chilled foods
If your baby is old enough to eat solid foods, you can give them some hard foods for gnawing, like a peeled and chilled banana, apple, carrot, or cucumber. However, make sure you keep an eye on your child so that any broken pieces of the food might not give them a choking hazard. Chilled curd or yogurt can also be helpful in soothing your baby’s gum pain.
Doctor recommended medicines
You may also approach your baby’s paediatrician or your family doctor to know about the over the counter medicines that can be given to your child to ease their teething pain. Some of these medicines are acetaminophen or ibuprofen. But, make sure you do not give any medicine to your child without getting a qualified doctor’s approval for the same.
Teething Toys – What’s in store?
You can visit a toy store and get a variety of teething toys and teething rings. Don’t get anything for your child that might be susceptible to breakage for the choking hazard they may carry. Likewise avoid something that has sharp edges. Also, make sure that the teething product that you have selected is non toxic and is free of lead paint and BPA (Bisphenol A – a carbon based synthetic chemical compound).
Be a little more sweet
Alright we know that you are sweet to your child! But, be a little sweeter and give them some popsicles and freezies (only if your child is fit and not ill, and if your doctor agrees). This will help your child get rid of the irritable pain. As a matter of fact, these sweet ways prove to be a great way to numb your child’s gums, which is much needed at such times when the temperature outside is soaring high. You can even make fruit popsicles at home and slushies for your baby.
No matter which method you follow, remember that baby teething is something that every parent has to adjust to – your child is as helpless as you are, and in fact, in pain as well. So, avoid being tetchy and enjoy the time while you can. Be active and capture these lovely memories by taking some photos of your toothless angel, which will help you remember the time evermore.
